Although partly replaced by modern weapons, still today belongs the dagger "telek" and the sword "takuba" to the equipment of the Tuareg tribes which continuing their traditional way of living. Lances and shepherd's crook still are also in the use as shepherd weapons to the defence against hyaenas, jackals and predatory big cats. All weapons and knifes have an iron blade, The handles are of steel with leather wrapping, or of hardwood, often decorated with ornaments of copper- and brass applications. The sword- and dagger sheaths are made of leather and are also decorated with brass and copper applications. The dagger were carried mainly at the upper arm. Remark: All daggers are old and used originals which were produced by hand, therefore they show various preservation degrees. |

Typical leather knife of the Tuareg women, which are responsible for the manufacturing of leather clothing. Because traditional way of life will be finished more and more and traditional leather clothes will be replaced against modern clothing, these knives are nearly not produced and used anymore. AFRICA:
Old, hand-forged Tuareg lance of the type "allar". These lances were used by the shepherds against hyaenas and jackals. The lance is forged throughout of iron and partly provided with inserted brass rings (2 and 4). The handle area (3) is wrapped with leather. The end (6) is flatly forged and was used for digging pits and holes, for example for tentpoles.The iron surface is partial decorated with scratch and gouge pattern (5). AFRICA:
The Tibbu or Tedda are a nomadic people living in the area of the Fezzan mountains. They don't belong to the ethnic group of Tuareg tribes. Their knives are manufactured of high quality of leather and iron. All iron handles are artistically covered with brown up to black leather, nicely decorated. The knife blades and knife ends consist of hand-forged iron. All knives are old and used originals, and difficult to obtain today. |
